In this seminar students survey the history of 17th and 18th century Chinese painting and exercise case studies informed by critical literature review and reflection on established methodologies in the field. The objects will be selected from the collection of the Museum für Asiatische Kunst Berlin, featuring traditional subject matters of Chinese literati painting (landscape, orchid, bamboo, rock, etc.) as well as figures and portraits, which are attached to a handsome variety of production, reception and transmission contexts. Students are expected to come to the course having acquired basic knowledge of Chinese history of the late Ming (1368–1644), and the Qing dynasty (1636–1912) up until the Qianlong emperor’s reign (1736–1795).
