SoSe 22: A saint from the frontier
Johannes Niehoff, Shabo Talay
Kommentar
Beyond any doubt, Efrem the Syrian is by far the most famous poet
of the Syriac language. His poems are extant since antiquity in all the
languages of the Christian East. Some of them are spurious. The poets was
born in Nisibis, a frontier city. Today, it is called Nusaybin and is
situated in Turkey. When he was born, the Roman Army against the
Sassanian Empire was garrisoned there. Firmly estabished, a Byzantine
bishop was to be found there.
How did this happen? Old Christian hymns are attested since the New
Testament. The Manichaeans too were writing poetry, before Efrem. And
since ancient times, there was a Jewish community there.
This questions are to be answered best by a comparative study of Efrem,
and this is our purpose in this course. Since the edition by E. Beck is
extant, we dispose also a thorough translation.
