SoSe 22: The mass politics of (anti-)globalization in the 21st century

Kommentar
Globalisation has become an embattled topic in the mass politics of democratic societies in the 21st century. From mass protests against trade pacts and bank bailouts in the 2010s to the British Brexit referendum in 2016 and the rise of populists on the radical right and radical left across many democracies especially in the last decade, opposition to different aspects of international integration now features prominently in electoral politics and challenges mainstream parties, governments, and international institutions alike. While scholars have debated various explanations for this phenomenon in recent years, the consequences of and reactions to the backlash in different contexts are only beginning to unfold and be studied, such that the broader trajectory of international integration by democracies remains a key topic going forward.
This seminar provides an introduction to the recent debate on the anti-globalisation backlash in democratic societies, focusing on economic, cultural, and political explanations for why some citizens turn (and vote) against international integration. Using the political sociology of globalisation in democracies as the main theoretical foundation and drawing on both comparative politics and IR, we also discuss the flipside of this debate: namely why (other) citizens are in favour of globalization. Taking into account the group’s interests in specific topics related to this phenomenon, these perspectives are used to discuss together different types of backlash to globalisation, different regional and historical contexts and versions of globalisation (backlash), as well as responses by domestic and international actors and possible trajectories of international integration in politicised times.
