Local media is one of the fundamental pillars of any media system, and yet its current challenges and transformation in the digital age have remained understudied by communication researchers. In this seminar, participants will get an overview of local media landscapes around the globe and discuss the impact and the importance of local news in a variety of media ecosystems including democratic, transitional and authoritarian environments. Invited guests from different world regions will provide insights into the state of local media in these different socio-political contexts. Participants will explore cases of the countries of their choice and analyze them in the context of different conceptual approaches introduced in the seminar.
