In this course, we aim at fleshing out the variety of ways in which major political concepts — such as difference, autonomy, self-determination, emancipation and justice — are mobilized in Global South feminist, anti-racist, anti-colonial and ecological accounts. How perspectives from the Global South contribute to rethink or challenge naturalized assumptions about these notions? Which set of questions they enable and which diverse alternatives they potentially pose? How knowledge is produced in Global South accounts? Focusing on lesser known authors — specially non-anglophone authors from Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa — working in interdisciplinary and multifaceted ways in different fields — such as activism, arts and politics —, we will start, in the first part of the Seminar, by critically reflecting on epistemic violence and the modes of engagement with knowledge produced in the Global South. Afterwords, in the second part of the seminar, we will focus on different feminist, anti-racist, anti-colonial and ecological approaches, paying particular attention to: (i) the role of territory and bodily experience in such accounts; (ii) the potential alternative notions of temporality that emerge; (iii) how form and content are mutually imbricated; (iv) how the relationship between theory and practice is envisaged; (v) how different axes of social division are articulated; (vi) the multiple forms agency is mobilized. Overall, our goal is to enable a more comprehensive and qualitative engagement with Global South perspectives and to enhance political imagination. The Seminar welcomes students, artists and activists from interdisciplinary fields and will be held in English. The variety of written, oral and visual sources the seminar mobilize will be accessible in English: there is no requirement of other languages to participation. However, the Seminar requires previous active engagement with the provided sources before each session, as well as active participation and inputs to the discussions during the classes. Openness to deal with different formats of knowledge production is also a desirable asset. In order to obtain the Final Grade (“Leistungsschein”), a written term paper is also required — which can be presented in English, Spanish, Portuguese and German. Schließen
