SoSe 22: S-Culture-Gender-Media: Narratives of Migration

The seminar will look at contemporary prose fiction that deals with one of the most urgent topics of our times: migration. We will discuss how these texts narrate the journeys of migrants and how they address border crossings as well as cultural encounters, confrontations, and transformations. At the same time, we will explore the impact of migration and uprootedness on the narrative. The course will also address the relationship between home and host country, questions of identity and difference, and the relation between the individual and the community. In many cases, this will include narratives of suffering and trauma.
Texts: Students should purchase and read: Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Americanah (2014); Sunjeev Sahota, The Year of the Runaways (2015); and Mohsin Hamid, Exit West (2017). We will start with Adichie’s novel.
Assessment will be on the basis of regular attendance, active participation in classroom activities (e.g. presentations, response papers), and an essay of about 4,000 words (for the Vertiefungsmodul with 10 LP), to be submitted after the end of the semester. Exchange students are of course welcome. You can gain up to 10 ECTS in this course.
