Kommentar
Borders are markers of territorial sovereignty, citizenship and belonging. The current war in Ukraine but also forced migration in different regions of the World bluntly show, that borders are still very powerful. This course deals with different dimensions—the material, symbolic, and discursive dimensions—of border politics and discusses the gendered effects of border politics. Moreover, this course introduces the concept of intersectionality and probes the ways in which both, territorial dividing lines and sociocultural boundaries (re)produce and exacerbate intersectional inequalities. How are gender, racial-ethnic and other identities constructed through the politics of borders and what are the material effects? How do activists challenge practices of bordering? How do they renegotiate questions of territorial sovereignty and belonging?
