SoSe 22: PS-Surveying English Literatures: The Sea and the Novel

James Daniel Mellor

Comments

This course will survey the relationship between the novel and the sea. The rise of the novel will be traced along with an exploration of voyage and exilic narratives, myths, and travelogues. The sea as a subject and trope will also be considered as an historic site for orienting our relationship with the world. Novels will be read along side critical and historic texts to explore how we have told our stories through evocations of the sea.

Students are asked to read Madeline Miller’s Circe before the first class
