SoSe 22: Philosophies of Labor and Work (Englisch)
Wout Cornelissen
Comments
Most of us will spend the greater part of our adult life working, and even to the extent that we do not or cannot work, our daily lives and self-understanding are thoroughly shaped by the societal realities of, expectations regarding, and attitudes toward work, especially paid work. In recent years, we are witnessing a resurgence of philosophical interest in questions of labor and work. In this course, we will first discuss seminal texts on labor and work from the history of philosophy, including, but not limited to, Marx, Weber, and Arendt. These readings will provide us with an indispensable conceptual foundation. Subsequently, we will read contemporary texts in normative political theory, critical theory, and philosophical anthropology that will allow us to discuss and assess pressing issues of labor and work under current social and economic conditions. close
