Comments
The course provides in-depth knowledge of the atomic structure of minerals (or solid materials), which is viewed as the basis of material science research that deals with structure-property relationships of materials.
It is based on the knowledge from the BSc module "Introduction to Mineralogy / Crystallography", which is briefly repeated at the beginning of the course. Crystallographic symmetry principles are dealt with, from which the crystallographic space groups and an in-depth structure concept are derived. In addition, a higher-dimensional symmetry is considered. The term "crystal" is expanded to include quasicrystals, including natural quasicrystals.
In the exercises, the focus is on working with models. The students have the opportunity to create their own quasicrystal model.
