SoSe 22: Introduction to the Anthropology of Religion (esp. Islam)

Kai Kresse

Comments

This seminar based course will introduce and discuss a variety of approaches to the anthropological study of religion, by means of engagement with selected representative texts, with reference to the history of anthropology, and with an eye to ethnography and theory. We shall read old and new classics as well as alternative influential texts, discuss them critically, assess their relevance, and attain an understanding of their respective goals and agendas. Our readings also include texts by anthropologists from the Global South.
A focus on ‘religion’ (in terms of practice, performance, discourse etc.) overlaps and intersects with politics, healing (and harming), material culture, and other fields. Exploring this, we shall concern ourselves with relevant key concepts, schools of theory and related methods. We shall engage with a range of ethnographic texts, focusing on different regions and diverse aspects of religion in context. Hereby, some case studies from Muslim contexts and the anthropology of Islam will be introduced and kept in view.
Seminar discussions shall be prepared and proceed by means of group work and presentations, as well as individual weekly readings response opportunities on blackboard. A variety of formats (offline and online) shall be used to facilitate exchange and discussion. close
