Seminar
SoSe 22: Journalism and memory in postcolonial contexts
Christina Haritos
Comments
Statue removals, museum restitutions, "Historikerstreit 2.0" – colonial memories are at the heart of current debates. This seminar will explore these controversies by analyzing the relationship between journalism and collective memory. Some of the main questions that we will aim to answer are: What role does journalism play in the production of collective memory? Who and what can (not) be remembered in journalistic coverage of colonialism? And, finally, how does journalism's representation of the past translate into who can "belong" today?
In the seminar, we will begin by analyzing the theoretical literature on journalism and memory. Next, we will dive into the particularities of (post-)colonial memory by looking at current research results and debates. Students will then have the opportunity to explore their own research questions in groups and to sharpen their qualitative research skills. Please note that the language of instruction will be English.
