SoSe 22: Arendt, The Life of the Mind: Thinking
Wout Cornelissen
Comments
The Life of the Mind was Hannah Arendt’s last book project, which remained unfinished at the time of her death. Conceived by her as a "kind of second volume” to The Human Condition, it offers an investigation into the mental activities of thinking, willing, and judging. In this seminar, we will read and discuss the first of the two parts of which a complete typescript survives: “Thinking.” We will focus on Arendt’s account of the specific character of the thinking activity, its relation to other mental activities, as well as to “the world of appearances.” We will supplement our reading by selected texts from Arendt’s philosophical interlocutors, and pay close attention to her specific way of reading the philosophical tradition. Furthermore, we will reflect on the status and structure of this unfinished text, which is currently being prepared for publication as part of Arendt’s Complete Works: A Critical Edition, a collaborative project based at the Freie Universität Berlin. close
