Die Frage, warum und wie Staaten und Städte entstanden sind, hat seit langem Wissenschaftler*innen und Gelehrte von der Philosophie und Soziologie zur Geschichte und Archäologie beschäftigt. Mesopotamien ist als Region der ältesten städtischen und staatlichen Gesellschaften im 4. und 3. Jt. v.u.Z. bekannt. Mehrere neue Studien, zuletzt das Furore machende Buch von D. Graeber und D. Wengrow, haben sich mit konzeptionellen, methodischen sowie empirischen Studien dieser Entwicklungen auseinandergesetzt. Im Seminar wird diese Literatur diskutiert und die Konzepte anhand von Fallbeispielen aus Mesopotamien untersucht. close
