Comments

We recognize everyday objects such as chairs or table without effort. The apparent simplicity belies the complexity of the task. We recognize objects out of ten thousands of alternatives, rapidly within the blink of an eye, and in spite of adverse and changing viewing conditions (lighting, occlusion, retinal size, viewing angle, etc). The focus of this seminar is to read, discuss and evaluate classical as well as recent original research articles that elucidate how humans solve visual object recognition. Seminars will be interspersed with lectures that provide guidance. The spirit of the course is interdisciplinary: we will integrate perspectives from psychology, neuroscience, and artificial intelligence research (deep learning). Given the evolutionary importance of vision to humans it is not surprising that half of cortex is devoted to visual processing. However, how the brain solves visual object recognition remains Visual object recognition in humans integrating perspectives from psychology, neuroscience and artificial intelligence research. close
