Comments
Seder Eliyahu is a special type of midrash. It has been designated as ethical midrash, though this is one of many attempts at classifying it with a genre name.
Composed in Hebrew in the second half of the ninth century somewhere in the eastern Mediterranean, Seder Eliyahu is conspicuous for its use of the first person singular as its main voice. This is presented as the voice of an anonymous rabbi who converses with a non-rabbinic other (a Karaite?) on questions of Jewish identity. In the course students achieve familiarity with this early medieval work, its characteristic style, literary forms and intertextual relations reading selected passages and discussing them in class.
