Comments
The seminar aims at following the different choices of themes and methods in empirical social research during the 19th and 20th centrury in Germany and the USA. Mainly the impact of the economic, political and social context on the research projects will be analyzed in each country. Up to World War I empirical social research boomed in Germany, but reduced its activities especially in sociology during Weimar Republic, and conducted strictly ideological oriented social research during National Socialism. In contrast, in the USA a wide range of topics and methods of empirical social research evolved since the early 1920s. After World War II the USA had a strong impact on the upcoming empirical social research and its methods in West Germany. close
