SoSe 22: Renaissance.Politik und Herrschaft am Beginn der Neuzeit

The Renaissance can be defined as a transitional and transformational epoch between 1300 and 1650, shorter or longer depending on which region in Europe you look at. Around 1300, it only concerns individuals in Upper Italy, and even in Italy, the heyday of Renaissance political theory is actually only the 16th century, whereas before that it was concentrated on Latin style, literary, artistic, philosophical fields, with the well-known exception in particular of the Florentine chancery secretaries, their letters of state, tracts and translations. This is where the seminar will take its classical starting point, then look at Machiavelli, Guicciardini and the theorists of the mixed constitution (Venice), the ragion' di stato tractate, and finally ask about parallels and influences in France and Germany, from the South to the North: Whether the modern era began 'only' in the minds of intellectuals, or whether there were also tangible economic, political and communication-historical conditions that made this beginning of the modern era possible, conditioned it or accompanied it, will also occupy us. close
