In the area of material culture, much less had changed for a peasant in the German lowlands or secluded valleys between 1500 and 1830 than for the upper classes: Only full industrialisation irreversibly changed the lifeworlds of the lower classes as well. For townspeople, courtiers, nobles, rulers, on the other hand, major transformations had taken place at different speeds and on different levels during the same period: Displacement of feudal orders by territorial central state tendencies; the development of early bourgeoisie and middle class with the dissolution of old urban-corporate frameworks as well as the alignment of lifestyles of nobility and third estate; mobility and acceleration in the world of communication; the penetration of early capitalist economic forms into broader strata of the population; the formation and pluralisation of media environments; the juridification and elements of the secularisation of law, which proceeded via the intermediate stage of the judicial persecution of witches, which in form was modern but in content appears to us today as the scientificisation of 'superstition'; the interweaving of modern state system practice with the old traditions of law and administration of the Old Empire, which led to the slow formation of early modern political styles at the courts: For all this, historical research used to like to use summary process terms as an overall designation ('modernisation'), which today are rejected with good reasons. However, people's lives did change markedly in the early modern period, which is the subject of this seminar.
