In this course we will read Hasan Tawfiq al-‘Adl’s work Rihla ila birlin (A Journey to Berlin), one of the earliest Arabic descriptions of German culture, society and education at the end of the 19th century. A prodigious graduate of al-Azhar and Dar al-‘Ulum, Shaykh Hasan al-‘Adl (1862-1904) was sent by the Egyptian government to Germany to study pedagogy and teach Arabic at Berlin University. He would spend five years in Berlin. Later, he would write a book on pedagogy “al-Bidagujiya” (1891-2), a book on gymnastics “al-Harakat al-riyadiyya” (1895), a manual for parents on child education “murhsid al-‘a’ilat ila tarbiyat al-banin wal-banat” (1897), as well as a work on the etymology of colloquial Arabic “Usul al-kalimat al-‘ammiyya” (1898). His work, "A Journey to Berlin,” provides a unique account of an Arab scholar’s encounter with German society and culture at the end of the nineteenth century. We will read his description of Prussian Berlin and its university, his meeting with Bismarck, his visit to an art school, his description of gymnastics, his fascination with Berlin’s museums and the amusing encounters he had while travelling by train. close
