The course explores emancipatory readings of the Qur’an, the Hadith and Islamic traditions by Muslim women and men in the modern era. As a critique of colonial oppression and authoritarian interpretations, these emancipatory readings emphasise equality, diversity, justice, and compassion from the perspective of a Muslim positionality. Based on a close reading of representative works, we will discuss the following questions: (1) What makes these approaches emancipatory? (2) Which Qur’anic concepts and Islamic practices have been perceived as potentially liberating and why? (3) What interpretative methods have these emancipatory approaches employed in their interpretation of the foundational texts? (4) To what extent do these approaches align with Christian and Jewish liberation theology and global struggles for social, racial, gender and environmental justice? The course will focus on writings by Muhammad Iqbal, ‘Ali Shariati, Malcolm X, Asma Lamrabet, Celine Ibrahim, among others. close
