The topic is a fraught one, since even today it is politically and
religiously marked: Greece, Serbia and a couple of other states get their
legitimisation from the strugglebetween Byzantines and Ottomans; their are
viewed normally as "Greeks" and "Turks".
This opinion is wrong, since we are dealing with pre - modern, dynastic
statehood.
Religion played a role, but not in all social sectors (e. g. for
marriage). Common was "convivencia", but this concept is hard to analyze.
In this course, we want to read first of all the sources; we have plenty
of them. Most of them are translated. The most important issue is the
formation of that border zone which is dismissed today as "Balkans. close
