SoSe 22: Environmental Movements and NGOs
Lena Partzsch
Comments
More and more movements, groups, networks and organizations are filling up a transnational public space and questioning the primacy of state politics, especially with regard to environmental problems. A sort of idealism runs rampant when it comes to environmental movements and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). These actors are respected lobbyists and service providers for almost all international organizations, as well as policy consultants and watchdogs of the global economy. For some scholars environmental movements and NGOs represent a democratic civil society, while others dispute their representativeness and consider them an expression of neoliberal globalization and the internationalization of the nation-state. This course explains and discusses theoretical and practical implications of the increasing relevance of movements and NGOs in terms of the democratization of political processes and the implementation of sustainability.
Participation in this seminar requires the willingness to active contributions, for example, in small group-work and discussions. All texts provided for the course need to be read in advance to each session. Participation in each session is necessary.
