Advanced Seminar
SoSe 22: S-Lit. Stud.: Periods-Genres-Concepts: Reading Shakespeare: The Sonnets
Andreas Mahler
Comments
Shakespeare’s Sonnets were among the last love sonnets written in the English Renaissance and they were scandalously published in a time when love poetry was considered to be an amateurish practice perpetrated mainly by aristocrats. The seminar will engage in a close textual reading of the Sonnets with regard to their status as poems, as a ‘narrative’, as textual games, and as instantiations of current contemporaneous discourses on love. Participants are expected to have acquired and worked through a copy of the Arden 3 edition of the Sonnets edited by Katherine Duncan-Jones. close
