„Whenever the Midrash runs short of examples, it quotes Job, no matter what the topic,—and it is always pertinent“, the words of Elie Wiesel in Job, our contemporary. The book of Job has fascinated readers since antiquity. In spite of the challenges posed by its language and composition, it counts with a rich reception in literature and art. Which exegetical interests do Jewish readings of Job reveal? The course seeks to provide an overview of the major themes of this exceptional scriptural book and its afterlife in the literature of antiquity, late antiquity and the Middle Ages. The course is intended for students of Jewish studies as well as German philology, comparative literature, religious studies, philosophy and cognate disciplines.
