SoSe 22: Frühneuzeitliche Hafenstädte und ihr Hinterland

Cornel Zwierlein

Comments

Port cities have always had their own characteristics. Whether in Germany it was the cities of the Hanseatic League (e.g. Lübeck, Hamburg) or medium-sized competitors (e.g. Emden); whether in England, alongside London, the 'Cinque Ports' had always cultivated a form of assertion of special rights through privileges and association: in the early modern period, a transformation began here that, from the state's point of view, recognised port cities as the key to modern, especially also colonial, economic foreign policy. New free ports were founded (Livorno) or large state companies were planted on the coast in the form of cities (Lorient as the seat of the Compagnie des Indes). Old port cities were transformed into mercantilist semi-monopoly or monopoly centres for certain trade regions or types (Seville, Marseille, Bordeaux, Amsterdam). Finally, the early modern 'trading empires' consisted essentially and for a long time of nothing more than a number of fortified port cities, newly founded or so transformed (Goa, Bombay, Batavia, the ports of the East Coast and the West Indies). Even in the development of communication technology in the modern world, from postal routes to shipping traffic, politicians and merchants always 'thought' of the world of long-distance trade as a network of wholesale towns, especially port towns, and did not imagine it as a regional entity, or only secondarily for a long time. With recourse to selected sources and in comparison with research on cross-sectional topics (politics, empire-building, research on city types and foundations, trade history), the seminar will examine these special cities as centres of early modern innovation processes. close
