Comments
This course examines the politics around the US Supreme Court. Focusing on a series of legal case studies, we will consider the role of the Court and its impact on American democracy. Drawing on insights from history, sociology, and political science, the course surveys the intricate and multilayered dimensions of judicial politics. The course is particularly attentive to the checkered history of race relations in the United States and the perennial struggle for equality before the law. Other major themes include the application and use of American Political Development (APD) as a scholarly method; the relationship between Congress and the Court; federalism and the separation of powers; the written and unwritten Constitution; the post-war reconstruction amendments; incorporating the Bill of Rights; the three-tiered approach to Equal Protection Analysis; and constitutional originalism. Our class meetings will consist of student discussion, viewing, listening, and reflection close
