SoSe 22: A History of Afro-Latin America, 18th-20th Centuries
Michael Goebel
Comments
Even though Latin America has long been the world region with the largest African diaspora, it has impacted theory-building on race and African Studies far less than the United States – especially in English. This seminar offers a survey of the histories of African-descended peoples in Latin America in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It will begin with scrutinizing how North American and Latin American intellectuals, mostly white, have viewed race relations in Latin America; with a critical eye regarding assumptions of “racial democracy” and mestizaje. But the larger part of the seminar will be dedicated to the social history of Afro-Latin America, with a focus on Cuba, Brazil, and Argentina. Starting from the consequences of long drawn-out processes of abolition we will end with the impact of the Cuban Revolution. close
