SoSe 23: Causes and Consequences of (Forced) Migration
Giuseppe Pietrantuono
Kommentar
Migration policy is at the top of the political agenda in Western democracies not only since the recent atrocities in Syria. Although some moderate voices praise the potential positive externalities of migration in times of demographic change, critical perspectives and populist outcries have primarily dominated the debate. Moreover, the rise of right-wing parties in many European countries suggests that these outcries tap into widespread anxieties among the public. Given the current trends in global migration, these anxieties are likely to grow fiercer in the future.
In this course, we will draw on empirical research and critically reflect on the evidence they provide to the debate on immigration and integration policies. We will discuss the causes of migration and the consequences for both migrants and the host countries communities in Europe.
The course will draw on literature from different social sciences and introduce the main theoretical concepts in migration studies. At the same time, the course will focus on strengthening students’ understanding of the evidence base in debates about migration. Schließen
