WiSe 12/13: Smells Like Teen Spirit

The Teenpic (teenage film) is defined both by its subject matter as well as its audience, which are in effect identical - teenagers. In more than one way it represents a challenge and a paradox. It is an easily identifiable genre, which never fails to defy all classical definitions of genre. Its success is undeniably connected with fashion and innovation, but at its very core are repetitions of pre-existing formulas. On the one hand, it is an entertainment artefact, which depends on popularity, and on the other hand, it constantly evokes society's margin and the destruction of social order. These two contradictory facts seem in themselves to be at odds with the educational stance, which film makers, educators and film scholars very often attribute to this genre.
With these paradoxes in mind, we shall take a closer look at a variety of American Teenpics, and follow the evolution of Teenpic experience over the last six decades. We shall also examine a variety of academic endeavours to make sense of Teenpics, and place them within the wider context, be it historical, social or aesthetic. Thus, we shall not only delve into the depth of this allegedly "shallow" genre, but also into the various ways it may be approached academically.
