Kai Martin Wiegandt
Kommentar
The fact that J.M. Coetzee's early novels have met with great international success can in part be explained by their allegorical qualities which make it possible to read them without knowing their South African context. In this seminar, we will pay close attention to the historical dimension of the novels written under Apartheid. We will look at documents about pivotal political events such as the Soweto uprising (1976) and place Coetzee's novels in the context of South African literary production of the 1970s and 80s. We will also consider excerpts from Coetzee's theoretical writings of the time and assess their relation to the fiction.
