Competence in performance is vitally important in the middle ages. We will study the role of the performer and audience, the wide range of medieval English performance traditions and the cultural and historical contexts in which they occur. The literary genres under discussion will be fabliaux, exempla, debate poems, lyrics, and plays.
A reader of the relevant primary texts will be made available to students at the beginning of the semester.
