WiSe 12/13: S-Ling. Theory and Gram. of English: Levels of Linguistic Analysis II

This course moves forward from basic concepts and methods in the study of language and of English. We will cover structural aspects of linguistic description in phonetics and phonology, the make-up of words (morphology) and the way in which words are combined into sentences (syntax). We will look more closely at the meaning of words (lexical semantics) and of sentences (sentence semantics). The rules and regularities underlying the actual use of language in communication will figure prominently (pragmatics). In the final part of the course, a selection of other areas of linguistics will be discussed.
Note that the AM consists of two parts, i.e., the V/Ü or lecture with exercises and this Aufbauseminar or advance course. The two parts need not be taken together but there is some level of interdependency for those students that take the two parts. The lecture will provide a broader picture, the course is more specific. The reading listed in the program is a help, it is not intended as obligatory and participants are to look around in libraries or by googling and find appropriate reading.
