WiSe 12/13: S-Culture-Gender-Media II:The Victorians and the Classics

The reception of the classics in the late eighteenth and the first half of
the nineteenth century is, with few exceptions, discussed in terms of a
shift from Rome to Greece -- and is as such tangible in the Greek
Revival in architecture, the increasing interest in Homer among classical
scholars, and an interest in Greece among the Romantic poets.
In this course, we will revisit such claims and investigate the ideological underpinnings of such larger cultural shifts in the reception of antiquity. In the second part of this course, we will focus primarily of the oscillation between Rome and Greece in the poetry of the Romantics in order to then study the ongoing engagement with Greek and Roman literature in Victorian poetry (esp. the Brownings, Tennyson, Garland).
Finally, we are going to look at Victorian fiction. A detailed syllabus and reading list will be available at the beginning of October -- interested students should contact me by email (). Schließen
