WiSe 12/13: Theatrical Adaptions of Narrative Texts
Tatiana Korneeva
Kommentar
This course is centred on the theatrical adaptations of prose fiction across a wide range of literary genres and historical and cultural backgrounds. By focusing on Shakespeare's and/or Dekker, Chettle and Haughton's dramatization of the novelle from Boccaccio's Decameron, Carlo Gozzi's Fairy Tales for Theatre, the staged adaptation of Fjodor Dostojevskij's The White Nights, and Luigi Pirandello's alteration of his own short stories for the stage, this course will explore the main principles of dramatic writing and story building, paying special attention to the specific goals and requirements involved in adapting narrative material for the stage.
This seminar will also provide an overview of the key aspects of styles and conventions of theatrical and performative practices, as well as recent critical approaches to drama. We will pursue the following questions: What are the differences between the narrative and dramatic forms? To what extent is drama also a narrative genre? What transformation does a prose text undergo when it is adapted from the page to the stage? How does the change of recipient from reader to theatre-going public, and the adaptation from one genre to another alter the ideological component of cultural material?
This course will be held in English. Readings and other materials will be made available on the website Blackboard at the beginning of the course.
