Kommentar
The course seeks to illuminate the ambivalent relationship between state/civil society on the one hand and organized crime on the other by looking historical and contemporary instances of land-based and maritime organized crime structures in East Asia, mainly China and Japan. The subject is approached from various angles: First through a comparison with organized crime in the Western context (mainly the Italian and American Mafia); second, by applying various general theories on organized crime from the fields of economics, politics, sociology, criminology and political science to the East Asian experience; and third, by placing the instances of East Asian banditry and piracy into the context of the larger discourses about power, gender, culture and art.
