WiSe 12/13: Narratology, Reading and Literary Theory
Florian Sedlmeier
Kommentar
The course provides students with a general tool-kit for literary studies. Focusing on narratology in the first half of the semester, we explore important concepts and ideas that define the study of literature. While the emphasis is on literary fiction, various forms of poetry and drama will also be investigated. The second half of the semester is dedicated to literary theory beyond mere narratology. Students are familiarized with major historical developments in literary criticism and they are introduced to some of the seminal concepts that continue to define North American literary studies in particular. While the emphasis is on theory and method, we, of course, read various shorter literary texts from different periods in class. At the end of the semester, the course discusses one novel at length. Reading several articles and contemporaneous materials along with it, we trace the shifts in academic scholarship. The seminar is thus designed to equip students with the basic methods necessary for reading the various literatures North America has to offer. Schließen
