This lecture course provides an introduction to the history of the United States from the Great Depression to the present. We will trace the rise and fall of the New Deal order, and the way ideas about citizenship, belonging, and governance have shaped national and local debates in the U.S. over the course of the 20th century. We will follow U.S. international engagements, in peace and war, in a developing age of American global power. We will examine social movements-from the civil rights movement and feminism to the rise of the evangelical right and neo-conservatism-across the political spectrum. We will follow the growth of mass consumer culture, along with the countercultures that have articulated alternative visions of American society and values. And throughout the semester - through an examination of primary sources ranging from political speeches to photographic exhibits, courtroom transcripts to television shows - we will pursue these themes across the complex and diverse topography of American life. Lectures will be in English.
