WiSe 12/13: Spin Orbit Effects in Condensed Matter Systems
Nancy Sandler Sergio Ulloa
Hinweise für Studierende
The course is intended for a broad condensed matter audience of students in theory and experimental physics
Zusätzl. Angaben / Voraussetzungen
We will assume basic knowledge in quantum mechanics and condensed matter concepts, but strive for a self-contained course
Kommentar
In addition to a general introduction to spin-orbit effects in solids, we will discuss effects of intrinsic and symmetry-breaking effects in:
The discussion will present general introductions to each subject, as well as theoretical descriptions and experimental consequences. Schließen
- Semiconductor heterojunctions
- Surface states in metals
- Graphene
- Transition metal dichalcogenides
- Topological insulators
- Kondo effect
- Superconducting states
- Effects on electron-electron interactions
The discussion will present general introductions to each subject, as well as theoretical descriptions and experimental consequences. Schließen
Literaturhinweise
We will provide appropriate reading material along the course for different topics. A textbook with general concepts is "Spin-Orbit Coupling Effects in Two-Dimensional Electron and Hole Systems", by Roland Winkler (Springer, Berlin, 2003). Schließen
