WiSe 12/13: Chinese Literature and Culture of the Early 20th Century

The course is a general introduction for graduate students to the literary history of the Republican period and contemporary critical approaches to the study of modern Chinese literature. It provides a survey of modern Chinese literature and culture from around the May Fourth Movement to 1949. Students will read major works, primarily in the short story genre, and discuss related social and historical issues. The course material is presented in chronological order, yet organised according to certain themes that are related to the history of China's modernisation. The issues that will be discussed in the class include nationalism, Occidentalism, and cosmopolitanism, urbanisation and public sphere, women problems, the establishment of the national language, the relation between literature and politics, and etc. The course will be presented in a mixed way of both lecturing and discussion. The background knowledge will be introduced and this will be followed by a critical reading of texts and a discussion of the readings. By the end of the course, students will grasp elementary knowledge of modern Chinese literature and culture, and develop critical reading skills. Most of the selected works of Chinese literature will be provided in both Chinese and English. Graduate students not concentrating in literature are encouraged to participate in this class.
