WiSe 13/14: Reform, Diversity, and Cultural Nationalism in the Age of Romanticism

This lecture course deals with the interlocking of Romanticism, cultural nationalism, and a culture of reform, focussing on documents, debates, and literary works from the period in-between the Jacksonian era and the Civil War. Topics include: Indian Removal, transcendentalism, the importance of Moby-Dick, debates on slavery and national expansion, sentimentalism and the abolitionist imagination, proslavery philosophies, the slave narrative, and other issues. The lecture course serves as "Grundlagenveranstaltung" of Culture-Module C in the M.A. program. Registration: via Blackboard before the first session. Requirements: see Syllabus and Course Description (on Blackboard). If you want to participate but cannot attend the first session, please contact Prof. Kelleter beforehand. Students can take this lecture course in conjunction with the seminar "Expansion, Diversity, and the Rhetoric of National Self-Description, 1820-1865" (same room, immediately after the lecture).
