WiSe 13/14: Managing Family and Work in the US and Europe
Tobias Scholz
Kommentar
Managing Family and Work is both sociological discourse as well as a real life problem that a majority of people is confronted with at some (earlier) point in their biography - at least in those societies which regard emancipation as one of their core values. There is a vast number of ways organize familial arrangements, all of them well backed ideologically. This makes the politics of the family a timeliness field of inquiry, especially for cultural comparative approaches. The seminar will center on the topic of gender cooperation (not parenting/education, as was suggested by an earlier working title) and the various discourses that relate to it, such as "modern families", women's employment, cultural myths of mothers and fathers, the "end of men", time management in families, the relation of family and/vs. the state and education, debates of gender emancipation vs. class as well as TV representations of families. The goal is to give an overview over the field rather than to head into any particular discourse full on, that is to discuss on a level that acknowledges that these topics/problems are our/your very own.
