Kommentar
In this course, we will examine the movement of people across and within
borders from an IR lense. What is the relevance of migration for the study
of IR and for the international system of states? Which concepts do IR
scholars employ to study migration, displacement and diasporas? How do
states and the international system react on migration flows and various
forms of migration? After a brief introduction into the current state of
global migration based on the latest reports, we will investigate how the
approach to migration changed in the course of state formation and
increasing institutionalization of the state apparatus. Here, we focus on
technologies and practices of the state to control and govern migration
such as border controls, passports, building of fences and walls etc. Yet
we will not only look at the state as an actor, but also examine the
concept of diaspora and the emergence of diasporic communities as
transnational actors. Hence we will approach migration with a
transnational approach both from a conceptual and methodological
perspective. Once we have familiarized us with the theoretical literature,
we will examine case studies on various forms of migration around the
globe with a focus on refugees, internally displaced persons and
diasporas. Students will chose a case study in a group project and present
it at the seminar, reflecting both the theoretical and empirical aspects
of the case study. As the study of migration still remains a marginal
field within in IR, the course will also include readings from neighboring
fields and disciplines for a comprehensive understanding of the subject. Schließen
