WiSe 13/14: V-Literatures of Medieval Britain I: Imagining Dreams:Dream Visions from Chaucer to Skelton
Wolfram Keller
Kommentar
This lecture will introduce students to late medieval and early modern dream visions, beginning with Geoffrey Chaucer's Book of the Duchess, House of Fame, Parliament of Fowls, and the Legend of Good Women. Moreover, the lecture takes into consideration fifteenth- and sixteenth-century dream visions, such as John Lydgate's Temple of Glass, James I of Scotland's Kingis Quair, Charles of Orleans's Love's Renewal, the Assembly of Ladies, and John Skelton's The Bouge of Court. At the beginning of the semester, a few sessions will be devoted to a review of classical and medieval theories of dreams (that is, common assumptions about the origins and meanings of dreams). Since the lecture will discuss dream visions primarily in terms of their modeling of cognitive processes - perception/imagination, evaluation, and memory - the discussion of the individual texts will also be preceded by a short introduction to medieval faculty psychology. Relevant primary and secondary material will be made available on Blackboard. Schließen
