WiSe 13/14: American Renaissance
Ulla Haselstein
Kommentar
The lecture class will introduce students to a central epoch of American Literary History: The authors to be discussed are all regarded as 'classics' - in one way or another. The most important objective is to understand the changing forms and functions of literature during the first half of the 19th century, and to demonstrate the techniques of the literary analysis. Another focus will be on the history of reception of these texts, some of which were instantly famous when they were published, while others were only discovered as major works in the 20th century. And finally the most recent developments in the criticism of the period, the so-called 'canon debate' of the 1980s and 1990s will be addressed. Schließen
