WiSe 13/14: Contemporary Politics of Migration
Margarita Mayer
Kommentar
After first looking at some theoretical perspectives conceptualizing, on the one hand (national) citizenship rights and, on the other, the geopolitical and economic forces underlying and shaping transnational migration processes in contemporary capitalism, the class will focus on the North American way(s) of dealing with migration and migrants. It will study state programs and policies both of the US and Canada, on national as well as sub-national levels, and it will explore civil society ways of coping, organizing, mobilizing and/or resisting. This will include a variety of (self)organizations and activities by and in the interest of a variety of migrant groups as well as anti-immigrant activism and contestations around border 'security.' After thus familiarizing ourselves with both the state policies and programs, and the mobilizations and movements from within civil society, the class will explore questions of gendered citizenship, informal labor markets, as well as the role of subjectivity in transnational mobilization.
