Kommentar
In this course we will explore the archaeology and civilizations of the Bronze Age in Anatolia (ca. 3000-1200 BCE). The course will be divided in five sections: 1) Introduction including the landscapes of Anatolia 2) The Early Bronze Age (ca. 3000-2000 BCE) 3) The Middle Bronze Age (ca. 2000-1700 BCE) 4) The Late Bronze Age (ca. 1700-1200 BCE) 5) The Bronze Age in the Republic of Turkey.
The course prioritizes archaeological approaches to the Bronze Age in Anatolia (and in modern Turkey). Each time period presents a unique corpus of material culture, and raises different kinds of problems requiring different archaeological approaches. Relevant textual evidence will also be considered for the Early Bronze Age (the question of Akkadian and Eblaite awareness of Anatolian kingdoms), Middle Bronze Age (the Assyrian Trading Colonies) and the Late Bronze Age (the Hittite kingdom and empire).
