WiSe 13/14: Critical Social Theory
Boris Vormann
Kommentar
This reading-intensive course discusses key texts of critical social theory: from Marx to the Frankfurt School, from Gramsci to Calhoun. Although the critique of mass consumer culture and critical work on psychology will be discussed, the main emphasis is put on the theorists' writings on social development, technological change, and the emancipatory power of knowledge. Moreover, the class will examine the critical potential of interdisciplinary work and read newer works of critical theorists in the US. In addition to presenting a main line of thought in social and political theory, the class will provide students with a set of theoretical perspectives for their own future research and critique contemporary political dilemmas in the United States with a view to less oppressive social arrangements Schließen
