WiSe 13/14: U.S. Foreign Policy and Film
Thomas Greven
Kommentar
US foreign policy is featured in many films and TV series, directly and symbolically, and political scientists are well advised to study these representations and metaphorical treatments because they shape citizens’
understanding of national interests, values, legacies, responsibilities, etc. While the exact impact of films is difficult to measure, these media offer the possibility to discuss important questions of identity, power, legitimacy, and conflicts, with respect to their representation and reception.
The study of film and politics, with the goal of moving beyond passive reception and towards critical analysis, requires more than the usual
workload: Students will have to watch the films on their own time, and consider not only political science literature but also film and cultural studies, as well as literature on the various issues and time periods covered in the films.
