WiSe 13/14: Hidden Parameters? Student's colloquium on science and society
Elvira Scheich
Kommentar
In this student's colloquium we want to look at the background and functioning of the physics-machine. At the beginning we want to uncover the structure and connection of the institutes and organizations of physics, where money is coming from, who decides where it goes and what exactly "renowns" a journal. Later, we want to explore the individual in physics. What hierarchies is it a subject to? What is its roll in society? What are its own prejudices, clichés and discriminations? Always on our focus: How do these things affect research?
In a nutshell: We want to study cultural, social, political and philosophical aspects of doing-physics and play a bit with methods usually applied in social sciences and humanities.
We - that are four master-students together with you. During the last years we often talked about these aspects of science and came to the conclusion, that we'd find it very interesting to take the time and have a informed discussion on these topics with a broader base of people. That's why we made this seminar. As this is the first student's colloquium for us, we hope for your interest, participation and support.
